The Balance
Women empowerment,feminism,gender equality are words which in my opinion are highly subjective .So this write-up is something from my point of view and not in a general sense and would be revolving around middle class girls and their families .
I know there is a lot of buzz about women and their rights or their voices and opinions and tons of essays ,newspaper articles and other media components on the necessity to do these .But I want to try and work out a solution instead of discussing the problems.
For an average girl ,if her choices are not being respected( at family level of course) ,there are two options. First ,either you are really determined and circumstances are really bad and you decide to go against family and probably leave everything and start something of your own. Second ,you agree to whatever they say they want from you. Now ,former option is really rare for an ordinary girl and she will almost anytime go for latter. So now , instead of settling here , lets try to strike a balance between the two parties (you and family).
If family says “You have 5 years to complete your education” , she can say “Then I will do whatever I wish in these years, even if it means going abroad.”
If family says “Marry at 20+4,20+5,20+6 (or any other age)”, she can say “Yes, but I will decide with whom I will marry ,someone who is compatible to me. “
If family says “Come home before X o’clock “, she can say “Fine , but I will decide with whom I spend my time during that period .”
I know these are very basic things , but life is unfair and not all are equally privileged .Also , it is not a universal solution. It is the girl who has to take a stand and try to strike a balance because at the end we need our family by our side without sacrificing our personal choices. So instead of trying to solve problems at global level we have to try doing them at personal level .Trying to strike a balance may also increase the chances of outcomes in your favor.
